🌊 The Asphalt Mermaid and the pool no one uses

Some people think the party is the crowded pool. The Mermaid taught me that sometimes it is the empty pool, six in the morning, and all of you inside it.

The Asphalt Mermaid works when the city sleeps and sleeps when it wakes. She told me about a Sunday when she went up to the rooftop pool at six in the morning — the one "no one uses" — just to have one thing in the world that was hers for fifteen minutes.

She wore a one-piece. Not the show-off bikini: the one-piece, closed, for actually swimming, that holds the body and leaves the mind free to think. She said she got into the water with the city waking up below and, for the first time in months, didn't feel she should be somewhere else.

Then she saw, in the window of the building across the street, the curtain move. The Curtain Neighbor, again, watching. But this time the Mermaid didn't shrink. She waved. She waved. And she swears the curtain, after a startle, waved back.

Next week the Curtain Neighbor comes down. And that changes everything — because no one imagines the story that woman at the window has to tell.
